Full Job Description

  • Carry out personal safety checks.

  • Check weather and sea conditions.

  • Prepare the boat for sea.

  • Carry out safety checks and prepare deck and storage areas.

  • Shoot, haul and clear fish and/or shellfish using a range of fishing gears.

  • Land and sort the catch.

  • Identify species.

  • Assist with preparing meals and cleaning.

  • Release fish in line with regulations and quota requirements.

  • Process and store the catch using ice and refrigeration to maintain a quality product.

  • Troubleshoot to address problems with the boat and fishing gear.

  • Carry out ropework and line handling for mooring and berthing.

  • Carry out and take part in safety drills, to ensure safe working boat and crew.

  • Unload the catch and take to market.

    Fisher L2 apprenticeship standard
  • Practical training in all aspects listed above to compliment the courses and formal training provided by South Devon College.

  • Peer-to-peer training with other deck hands plus mentoring by an experienced skipper.

    Problem solving skills, Team working, Determination to succeed, Energetic, Safety awareness, GCSE or equivalent English (Grade 2) Essential

  • GCSE or equivalent Maths (Grade 2) Essential
    Other Seafish Course - Time on a Fishing Vessel (Grade TBC) Essential
    Other Previous experience on fishing vessels (Grade NA) Desired, You will need to have great physical fitness and determination, as well as be able to handle sea sickness. You will also need to be able to work well in the wet and cold weather - while maintaining an adventurous spirit.

    Waterdance is a family-owned fishing company and is part of the Greendale Group. We have over 20 boats based in Devon and Cornwall including beam trawlers, netters, and potters. Our boats land regularly at Brixham, Newlyn, Salcombe and Exmouth. These ports provide direct access to the western channel where clean deep waters and strong currents create the perfect environment for world class seafood. Sustainable fishing methods ensure that these stocks remain intact.

    Wages will be reviewed during performance over the 18 months.

    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

  • Shifts are weather dependent and include early morning starts. Shift times also vary (e.g.- could be 12 hours when on board a vessel, TBC). Rest days and block release for college., You could reduce your training time, or finish your apprenticeship faster, if you have relevant prior learning or experience. This could be relevant:
